‘Meenakshy’
from the ‘Revival’ series
Oil on Canvas
120 cm x 180 cm
2019

‘Meenakshy’ confronts you as the inaugural piece of P. Gnana’s recent series entitled ‘Revival’, whereby the leading painter-sculptor invokes the unique personality of his subject on canvas by honouring her with a beautiful and meaningful name, in an effort to revive the appreciation of the splendour and cultural value in traditional Indian names. It is intriguing to note that, in this respect, an image personifies a name, whereby its literal definition is not compelled to be epitomised as the subject matter in the painting. In other words, ‘Meenakshy’ is ‘alive’ in her own right, on her own terms, gorgeously and receptively.

Heritage with Vidhya
